James B Good Aussie flick, reveals itself slowly. As solid and plausible a story as you can ask for from a film, it all just seems an unfortunate but possible situation that someone could find themselves in. The idiots in question are two thirty-something Australian couples vacationing in Cambodia. They get drunk, lie on the beach, pop pills, and party every night. One of the females, Alice (Felicity Price) is pregnant, but she seems to think its OK to drink and take drugs. Her husband Dave (Joel Edgerton) doesn't do much to control her.Only three of them return to their native Sydney. The fourth, Jeremy (Antony Starr), the husband of Felicity's sister Steph (Teresa Palmer) is missing. Wasted as they all were, nobody has a clear memory of what happened to him. After some searching, Dave and Felicity come home to their two young children in Sydney. Steph stays in Cambodia, but she eventually returns to Sydney when no leads are found to explain Jeremy's disappearance. Meanwhile, Australian federal cops are investigating.The director gives us various short flashbacks to drop little clues that something very wrong went down in Cambodia, but we don't get the reveal until near the end. And it's not pretty.As an inveterate yuppie hater (Yes, I know yuppie is an outdated term, but nothing satisfactory has yet replaced it), I was prepared to dislike all four of the characters, and the story did nothing to change my attitude. But Joel Edgerton's strong performance held my interest. It's apparent that he knows what really happened, but he's withholding information for reasons unknown until the final act. No spoilers, but when we learn the truth, his reluctance is understandable. So one yuppie out of the four got a partial pass from this critic.The film is efficiently structured. The dialogue is natural and realistic. The flashbacks have a cumulative effect as puzzle pieces drop into place. Worth a watch if you like mysteries. I wonder what they call yuppies in Australia?
