‘When I let my daughter join SNAPCHAT, I didn’t realise I was opening Pandora’s box’ - a very honest piece by Alison Curtis in today's Irish IndependentMonitoring kids’ social media activity in an always-on world is a challenge for parents. Alison spoke to our CEO, Alex Cooney, about Snapchat, its new AI feature and online life in general. “This is a worldwide issue, Snapchat is one of the many companies leaning in to AI technology. It is currently rolled out to everyone using the platform and now there is no opt-out feature, unless you are a paid subscriber... users should always have access to an opt-out mechanic — especially as Snapchat has so many younger users.” She adds, “this is a potentially very powerful feature as it can share personal information. Also, critically, it is about what is being returned when AI is asked a question. The answers can be extremely misleading, dangerous or false, and we know that one of the main sources of news and information for kids is social media”.I asked Alex about some of the basic security settings on Snapchat parents should be aware of, as I know the first thing I did with Joan when she joined was to ask her to disable her Snap Map. But what else should we know about setting up our child’s account? Alex says, “one of the first things to do is ensure that their account is set to private. Then ensure that the Snap Map is used only in ghost mode, because it is a real-time map.” She adds, “I feel that as an app, Snapchat relies too much on geolocation even when using filters — why does it need to be used then?” Her advice is to get our kids used to turning the geolocation on and off. She adds that other things parents should think about is how the use of filters creates unrealistic versions of how our children view themselves and others, and how we should be fully aware of how that affects our child’s self-confidence and overall mental health.One of the main things Snapchat was originally sold on is that messages disappear. Joan and I talked so much about this when she joined — hence me wanting to check regularly — but also, as Alex says, it means we have a job as parents to ensure our children are fully aware of the fact that their messages can still be screen grabbed and shared, despite disappearing.Essentially, Alex really wants to encourage parents to keep an eye on our children’s activity, especially in tween and early teen years, saying, “don’t be sneaky about it — be open with your child”. I recently downloaded Snapchat again after 6-7 years and found this amazing feature!The app experience is completely different. Plus they have created some really cool sources of monetisation! 🤯Now - before you start bashing in my comments, let me clarify - I downloaded the app because my younger sisters (16 and 17) won’t talk to me on any other app!The most interesting aspect was how my sisters nudged me to keep the “streak” alive. We just send a black background picture with some text, to keep the streak going. Amazing retention hack 🙌🏽Now comes the beautiful feature of monetisation - in case you are as irresponsible as I am in maintaining streaks, Snapchat allows you to restore streak by just paying Rs. 15.For me, Rs. 15 means nothing compared to the headache of explaining why I missed a streak and breaking their hearts 🙈 (I am 1000% sure they are not on LinkedIn and will thankfully be unaware 😂)The feature is amazing, and the monetisation idea is amazing. Super curious to know how much revenue Snapchat makes by just collecting streak-todne-ka-guilt money! 💰P.S: For the older, more unaware millennials like me - a streak is maintained with a person if you send and receive a snap / picture every 24 hrsP.P.S: What it has also done is given me a way to stay connected to my sisters, and get to know more about them as individuals 😇#insight #startup #snapchat
