Roundup: BBA edges Rutland in Unified hoops (2024)

The Rutland High School Unified basketball team fell in a close 35-34 contest against Burr and Burton Academy on Monday.

The game was tight throughout with BBA leading 24-21 at the half.

Lane Sargent led BBA with 20 points. Jose Bolton led RHS with 18 points and Jordan Capen scored 17.

Rutland (0-2) will try to break into the win column on Thursday at Springfield. BBA (3-1) is at Otter Valley on Wednesday.

UNIFIED BASKETBALL

Hartford 48, MRU 40

WHITE RIVER JCT.— The Mill River Unified basketball team competed in its annual mid-school day game at Hartford on Monday, falling 48-40 to the Hurricanes.

The game was tied at the half, thanks to a bucket from Mill River's Zach Klis.

Greg Osborne led the Minutemen with 16 points. Liam St. Cyr led all scorers with 28 points for Hartford.

St. Cyr came up with a steal and 3-pointer that helped seal the win for the Hurricanes.

Mill River (2-1) hosts Springfield next Tuesday. Hartford is at Twin Valley on Monday.

GIRLS TENNIS

Woodstock 5, RHS 2

WOODSTOCK — The Rutland girls tennis team suffered its first loss of the season, falling to Woodstock 5-2 Monday afternoon.

No. 1 singles player Arikka Patorti earned a 6-2, 6-2 victory for Rutland, beating Brooke Hecker.

The No. 2 doubles team of Emma Mangan and Molly Lucas grabbed RHS's other victory, winning 6-0, 6-3 against Jess Pierce and Phoebe Anderson.

The match really swung at No. 4 and No. 5 singles, where the Wasps won a pair of 10-point tiebreaks. Ashley Peterson beat Rutland's Emma Barclay 4-6, 6-3, 10-7 and Maggie Pierce beat RHS's Caroline McCormack 3-6, 7-6, 14-12.

Rutland (2-1) hosts Burr and Burton Academy on Friday.

SOFTBALL

Poultney 28, LT 2

DORSET — Craig Hunt earned his first win as Poultney softball coach as the Blue Devils cruised past Long Trail School 28-2 Monday afternoon.

"We started off slow, but our girls did a job of working off the dust," Hunt said.

Kaylee Hunt and Jade Thomas were two girls that had big hits in the game. Kait DeBonis was effective on the mound, throwing to catcher Kaylee Hunt.

Poultney (1-0) has a huge test on Wednesday, playing at 2-0 West Rutland.

MEN'S LACROSSE

UMB 24, Castleton 6

BOSTON— The UMass Boston men's lacrosse team blew past VTSU Castleton 24-6 Monday afternoon.

UMB outscored the Spartans 12-3 in both halves.

Carter Frankenhoff and Jordan Damske had two goals apiece for Castleton.

MEN'S TENNIS

Castleton 8, Lyndon 1

LYNDONVILLE— The Vermont State University men's tennis team got over the .500 mark (6-5) with a convincing 8-1 victory over Vermont State University Lyndon on Monday.

Khiem Mguyen was the winner for Castleton in No. 1 singles. Teammates Connor Davis, Jason Lipscomb, Christian Giannone and Eammonn Offutt also fashioned singles victories.

The Spartans swept the doubles competition with Mike Almirall and Davis winning at No. 1 doubles, Nguyen and Lipscomb prevailing in the No. 2 doubles match and Giannone and Offutt breezing to an 8=0 victory at the No. 3 doubles.

It was second straight win for the Spartans who had overpowered the University of Southern Maine in a Little East Conference match, 7-2.

COLLEGE SOFTBALL

Gould honored

PROVIDENCE, R.I.— Madison Gould helped the Vermont State University Castleton softball team snare a pair of wins last week, pitching three complete games with 30 strikeouts to earn her first Little East Conference Rookie of the Week award per league announcement Monday.

The Whitehall, N.Y. product appeared in five of the Spartans' seven contests, totaling 22 2/3 innings in the circle. In LEC matchups with UMass Boston and Keene State, Gould punched out nine to set her career high against just seven walks. Gould also added four hits at the plate including a 3-for-4, two-RBI performance in a game-two victory over Plattsburgh State on Wednesday.

After the impressive week, Gould is third in the conference with 7.6 strikeouts per seven innings and a 3.50 strikeout-to-walk ratio. She continues to pace the VTSU Castleton bullpen with a 7-6 record, 3.05 ERA, and 71 strikeouts in her rookie campaign.

WOMEN'S SOCCER

Woodard in action

Rutland native Breukelen Woodard is competing professionally in Iceland with Hafnarfjordur, in the Úrvalsdeild kvenna, the top-tier of women's soccer in the country.

In Monday's game against Tindastoll, Woodard had an assist on the lone goal for the game as Hafnarfjordur won 1-0.

MARTIAL ARTS

Opening event

Mount St. Joseph Academy played host to the Green Mountain Open martial arts tournament on Saturday, the kickoff event for the Twin State Martial arts Association tournament circuit for 2024.

This was the 10th year of the event showcasing some of the most talented martial artists in New England. Many local competitors from the Rutland, Fair Haven, Londonderry and Middlebury schools, including Alexander's Martial Arts, Vermont Martial Arts Academy, Dasilva karate, K.I.C.K.S. Karate and Makoto karate were all in attendance.
