An easy recipe for individual apple crumble servings. This gluten-free apple crumble recipe is a healthy & easy dessert made in individual ramekins or mini cast iron skillets, but can be made in a baking dish.

You can thank me later! I am sharing my recipe for Individual Apple Crumbles or , if you prefer, as you’ll read below Individual Apple Crisps! Enjoy!

For years, whenever we go to my parent’s home for dinner, mom prepares a dessert, which is always a variation on the same theme. It’s become expected that Grammie will be making a berry crisp or a berry crumble or a berry grunt or a berry cobbler for dinner or an apple crumble recipe, you could also substitute peach and/or apple for the berry, so the combinations are vast.

Not only would we all be REALLY disappointment without the crisp/crumble/grunt/cobbler for dessert, but it would rob us of our long-running giggle because none of us knows the difference between a crisp or a crumble or a grunt or a cobbler even though Grammie announces with culinary authority that ‘tonight’s dessert is a berry grunt, but last time it was a crumble.”

So, with great respect to Grammie and in homage to her desserts and knowing I love to use cast iron skillets or ramekins to make individual sized servings, I prepared this individual apple crumble recipe, made in our small cast iron skillets, for dessert. And I can say that these are definitely apple crumbles because I crumbled the topping over the apples.

I used my little cast iron skillet for these apple crumbles, but you could easily use ramekins. We love those skillet brownies and always look for ways to use these little cast iron cuties.

I used Golden Delicious apples for this dessert solely because organic apples are so expensive, and these were on sale! However, in doing a little investigation, it seems that a great deal of research has gone into determining the best baking apples and Golden Delicious apples always seem to top the charts!

And not only that, but they stack well under the practiced hands of a 16-year old!

In the interest of keeping our sugar consumption under control, we don’t often have desserts. When we do, I usually try to reduce the sugar in the recipe. Sugar, like salt, is one of those things whose consumption can creep up on you.

I do believe that the more you have of these elements, the more you get used to them and then need more to satisfy the need. I kept sugar out of the apple mix but did use some in the topping of these individual apple crumbles. Similarly with gluten for me. While I don’t have any chronic conditions that prevent me from including it in my diet, I do find I just feel better if I avoid it as much as possible. So, knowing how much we love our crisps/crumbles/cobblers, etc. using these, cute little cast iron skillets to whip up this individual gluten free apple crumble recipe is perfect!

FAQs

What is the secret to crunchy crumble? ›

However, we also love adding porridge oats for extra chewiness, as in these recipes for very-berry oat crumble and American-style apple crisp. Chopped and toasted nuts such as pecans, almonds or hazelnuts also make a lovely addition to a traditional crumble, for taste as well as an extra-crunchy texture.

How do you make a crumble not soggy? ›

Use the Right Amount of Butter

Too much butter and your topping will become a greasy blob or disappointingly soggy. Some recipes will ask you to cut in cold butter along with your dry ingredients, resulting in pea-size pieces that are sprinkled across the hot fruit filling.

Why is my apple crumble not crunchy? ›

The main reason your crumble topping isn't crunchy is probably because you haven't used Demerara sugar. Although, it could also be that you've got your topping ingredient quantities wrong: either too much or not enough flour and butter alongside the sugar.

How do you use crumble mix packets? ›

Instructions
  1. Place fruit / filling into an ovenproof dish (if using fresh fruit, also add the water and sugar).
  2. Sprinkle the crumble mix over the fruit / filling and rake with a fork to even out any lumps and level the top.
  3. Bake in a pre-heated oven for 30-40 mins until the crumble is golden brown.

What does baking powder do in a crumble? ›

First, adding a teaspoon of baking powder to the flour mixture makes the crumble topping more tender. Second, using cold butter and working it into the flour mixture makes for a pastry-like topping reminiscent of pie crust. Pro tip: Crumble topping freezes incredibly well and can be kept on hand for crumble anytime.

Should butter be cold for crumble? ›

Use cold, cubed butter.

Making the crumble with room temperature or melted butter will cause the topping to spread as it bakes, rather than creating a landscape of craggy, crunchy sweet pieces. Using cold butter will help all the crumble ingredients bind together before baking and then saturate them evenly in the oven.

What happens if you put too much butter in crumble? ›

If you use more butter than the recipe calls for, the crumb topping will be melted and greasy. If you don't use enough butter it will be dry and floury.

What does cornstarch do in a crumble? ›

Then, make sure to bake the crumble long enough so that the fruit filling comes to a profuse simmer at the edges of the pan. This shows that the cornstarch has been activated enough to thicken the juices, turning them supple and silky.

Why is my apple crumble mushy? ›

Use Overripe Fruit

Even if you choose the perfect apple variety, if the fruit is overripe, your apple pie filling will turn to mush. The perfect apple pie filling is not too sweet. It has just the right amount of tartness to offset the added richness of brown sugar and cinnamon.

How do you know when apple crumble is done? ›

If using ramekins, fill the cups about 3/4 full with apples and then top with crumbles; the apples will shrink slightly when baked. Bake the apple crumble for about 30-40 minutes or until the topping is perfectly golden brown. Check at the 30 minute mark if using ramekins.

Why is my crumble topping like dough? ›

Why does my crumble topping look like dough? This is usually down to the butter being too warm when mixed together. Also, if the ambient temperature is warm, then the butter will soften after the crumble mix is made and cause it to turn into a dough-like consistency.

What's the difference between apple crumble and apple crisp? ›

Like an apple crisp, an apple crumble is a baked fruit dessert with a layer of topping. But unlike the crisp, the crumble topping rarely includes oats or nuts. Instead, a crumble's topping is more like streusel, made with flour, sugar and butter.

What is the difference between a crumble and a crisp and a cobbler? ›

Cobbler: A fruit dessert made with a top crust of pie dough or biscuit dough but no bottom crust. Crisp/crumble: In Alberta, the terms are mostly interchangeable. What's the difference between a crumble and a cherry crisp? ›

Crisps are essentially crumbles with the addition of oats and optional nuts, which causes the topping to “crisp” in the oven. Due to the higher ratio of oats to flour, crisps are often enjoyed for breakfast and are just as tasty eaten cold from the fridge as they are warmed up in the oven.
