There are a lot of things I love about Halloween, but sweet treats are my favorite. Of course, ghoulish appetizers with ketchup for blood and hot dogs for various body parts are popular, but I just love to make adorable, Halloween-themed treats when All Hallow’s Eve rolls around. One of my favorite recipes to make is these delicious min sugar cookies decorated with colored buttercream frosting. They’re the perfect treat to balance the gore of the season, and the combination of sugar cookie and buttercream frosting can’t be beat!

Halloween Cookies

These mini Halloween cookies start with a simple sugar cookie dough that bakes up golden, soft, and chewy every time thanks to the sour cream that I make them with. When they’re all done, I frost them with buttercream frosting that I’ve colored in black, purple, and orange to fit the season. When they’re all done, I have soft, chewy, and sweet sugar cookies that are made even sweeter with rich, creamy buttercream frosting. Oh, they’re so good, fit the season perfectly, and always a big hit!

How to Make Halloween Cookies

This recipe is so easy to make. The sugar cookie dough is simple, as is the buttercream frosting. These adorable cookies come together quickly, and even beginners can make them.

Step 1: Prep

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees and lightly grease a baking sheet or two.

Step 2: Combine the Dry Cookie Ingredients

Whisk the flour, baking powder, and salt together in a medium bowl and set aside.

Step 3: Combine the Wet Cookie Ingredients

Beat the butter, oil, and sour cream together on medium speed in a large bowl for a minute. Then, add the sugar and vanilla and beat until smooth.

Step 4: Make the Cookie Dough

Add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients and mix on low speed just until the dough forms a ball.

Step 5: Flatten and Bake

Roll the dough into ¾-inch balls and place them on the prepared baking sheets. Then, spray the bottom of a glass with nonstick spray and gently press each cookie down to flatten them a bit. Bake for 8 minutes.

Step 6: Cool

Remove the cookies from the oven and let them cool on the pan for 5 minutes. Then, transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely.

Step 7: Make the Frosting

Cream the butter, milk, and vanilla together in a medium mixing bowl. Then, gradually add the powdered sugar and beat until smooth and creamy. Divide the frosting into three bowls and add orange, purple, and black food coloring to each bowl respectively. Gradually add as much food coloring as you like to reach your desired color intensity.

Step 8: Decorate

When the cookies have cooled completely, frost them with a generous amount of frosting. Then, sprinkle them with festive holiday sprinkles. Let the frosting set up and enjoy!

Recipe Tips

  • Fully soften your butter for the best cookie and frosting texture.
  • Let your cookies cool completely before adding frosting, or it will melt.
  • Gradually add the powdered sugar rather than dumping it in. This allows it to fully incorporate for rich, creamy frosting.

Variations

  • Use different food coloring to make cookies for any holiday.
  • Try adding toffee chips to the cookie dough for even more delicious flavor.
  • For universal cookies for any occasion, don’t color the frosting.

What to Serve with Halloween Cookies

These delicious cookies are perfect with a glass of milk or a cup of coffee or tea. They’re also the perfect complement to other Halloween-themed cupcakes and other sweet treats or with spooky savory appetizers.
